How business insurance works

Every business carries risk a customer slips on a wet floor, a laptop is stolen from the office, a fire shuts operations for six weeks. Business insurance transfers those risks to a carrier in exchange for a premium. We evaluate your operation, match you with carriers that specialize in your industry, and build a coverage package that fits.

The core commercial coverages

  • Commercial property Buildings, equipment, inventory, signs against fire, theft, vandalism, and select natural disasters.
  • General liability Third-party bodily injury and property damage. Required by most San Diego landlords, venues, and general contractors.
  • Business owners policy (BOP) Property + liability + business interruption bundled for most small and mid-sized businesses.
  • Commercial auto For vehicles used in business delivery vans, service trucks, company cars.
  • Workers compensation California legally requires it for any business with employees.
  • Professional liability (E&O) Claims of negligent advice or faulty professional services.
  • Cyber liability Data breach response, legal fees, customer notification, ransomware recovery.

What drives your commercial premium

  • Industry Restaurants and construction run higher than accounting offices.
  • Revenue and payroll Larger operations pay more but unit rates often fall.
  • Location Zip code, building type, crime rate, proximity to fire services.
  • Claims history Prior claims can increase premiums or limit markets.
  • Coverage limits and deductibles More limit or lower deductible = higher premium. We model a few scenarios together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need general liability if I have a BOP?

A BOP already includes general liability for most small businesses. You’d only add standalone GL if your business doesn’t qualify for a BOP or needs a higher limit than the BOP allows.

Are sole proprietors or LLCs required to carry workers comp in California?

Only if you have employees. A true single-member LLC with no employees isn’t required, but you may still want occupational accident coverage or a ghost policy to meet contract requirements.

What if my business operates from home?

Homeowners insurance usually excludes business activity. A separate business policy or BOP endorsement protects equipment, inventory, and liability arising from your home-based operation.
